Code of Ethics

The Bloodlines Kennel Club (BKC)

Preamble

As members, breeders, and participants in The Bloodlines Kennel Club (BKC), we recognize our responsibility to the dogs we care for, the breed community we serve, and the public we influence. This Code of Ethics outlines the principles we uphold to ensure the welfare, health, and dignity of all dogs registered and represented by The BKC.

Section I: Animal Welfare

1.      Humane Treatment
All dogs must be provided with proper housing, nutrition, clean water, veterinary care, exercise, and social interaction.

2.      No Abuse or Neglect
Physical abuse, neglect, or inhumane treatment of animals will result in immediate investigation and possible termination of membership.

3.      Euthanasia
Should only be performed by a licensed veterinarian and only when deemed medically necessary or in the animal’s best interest.

Section II: Responsible Breeding

1.      Breed Purpose and Standards
Breeding shall only be undertaken to preserve or improve breed quality, health, and temperament as defined by The BKC breed standards.

2.      Health Screening
Breeding dogs must be screened for hereditary disorders common to the breed (e.g., hips, heart, eyes) and bred only when deemed healthy.

3.      Age and Frequency Limits

o        Females shall not be bred before 18 months or after 6 years of age.

o        No female shall have more than 2 litters in a 12-month period.

4.      Record Keeping
Accurate records of matings, litters, veterinary visits, and placements must be maintained.

Section III: Sales and Placements

1.      Honest Representation
All advertising and descriptions must reflect the dog’s true pedigree, health status, and temperament.

2.      Sales Agreements
Breeders must use written contracts clearly stating terms of sale, health guarantees, return policies, and responsibilities of both parties.

3.      Lifetime Responsibility
Breeders must be willing to assist in rehoming any dog of their breeding, at any time during the dog's life.

4.      Prohibited Sales Channels
BKC dogs may not be sold to brokers, pet stores, or puppy mills under any circumstances.

Section IV: Sportsmanship and Conduct

1.      Fair Play
Members will conduct themselves with integrity and courtesy at all BKC events and in all dealings with fellow members and the public.

2.      No Harassment or Discrimination
Any form of harassment, bullying, or discrimination is strictly prohibited.

3.      Conflicts of Interest
Judges, officials, and breeders must disclose any potential conflicts and recuse themselves when appropriate.

Section V: Compliance

1.      Acknowledgment
All members and applicants must agree to abide by this Code of Ethics.

2.      Violations
Violations will be investigated by the Ethics & Grievance Committee. Sanctions may include warnings, suspension, revocation of registration privileges, or expulsion.
