         Ring Steward Responsibilities at a Dog Show

1.      Prepare the Ring:

o        Ensure the ring is clean, safe, and properly set up before judging begins.

o        Place and check ring numbers, signage, and equipment (tables, mats, ramps, etc.) as needed.

2.      Coordinate with the Judge:

o        Meet with the judge prior to judging to review procedures and preferences.

o        Maintain communication with the judge throughout the event to facilitate smooth operation.

3.      Manage Exhibitor Flow:

o        Organize and call exhibitors into the ring in catalog order.

o        Ensure timely and orderly entry and exit of dogs and handlers.

o        Help maintain a calm and efficient pace in the ring.

4.      Handle Paperwork and Results:

o        Present and collect judges’ books, armbands, and other official paperwork.

o        Accurately record results as dictated by the judge.

o        Deliver completed paperwork to the superintendent or show secretary.

5.      Support Ring Procedures:

o        Assist with placements, ribbon distribution, and awards as directed.

o        Help maintain the judge's table, replenish materials, and manage any special needs.

o        Provide guidance to novice exhibitors or clarify procedures when needed.

6.      Maintain Order and Etiquette:

o        Enforce ring etiquette and assist in resolving minor issues or misunderstandings.

o        Monitor for disqualifications or safety issues, and report them appropriately.

7.      Liaise with Show Officials:

o        Coordinate with other ring stewards, show officials, and staff for smooth scheduling.

o        Alert officials to delays or problems requiring attention.

A good ring steward is organized, discreet, respectful, and knowledgeable about dog show procedures and breed standards.
